Chairman and CEO
As Chairman and CEO of Raleigh-based Kane Realty Corporation, John Kane has developed projects since 1978 in a full range of property types including Regional Malls, Neighborhood and Community Centers, Office Buildings and Health Centers. The Redevelopment of 120 acres, Raleigh’s North Hills, is a mix of office, residential, hotel, entertainment, restaurants and retail which is becoming Raleigh’s Midtown. Working closely with the surrounding neighborhoods, Kane led a team of professionals to create a multi-block district that invites gathering and a place that is positively changing the quality of life in Raleigh.
A graduate of Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration. A member of Young Presidents’ Organization, Chief Executives Organization and World Presidents’ Organization. Kane is a board member of the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce, North Carolina Symphony, Research Triangle Regional Partnership and the Duke Raleigh Hospital Advisory Board. He is an active member of the Urban Land Institute, the International Council of Shopping Centers, the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks.
MICHAEL C. SMITH
President and COO
Mike Smith is President and COO of Kane Realty Corporation, having joined the company in 2001.
Mike’s professional experience includes working in the Political Affairs Office of The White House, participating in Citicorp Asia’s China Fund in Hong Kong, serving as vice president Banc of America Securities’ capital markets group and the position of managing director at PNC Capital Markets.
With a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, Mike also holds a masters degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina’s Kenan-Flagler Business School. He was named one of the Triangle Business Journal’s “Forty Under Forty” for 2004. In addition, Mike is a member of Young Presidents Organization (YPO), The Conference Table (Wake County Visitor’s Industry Advocacy Group), serves on the Board of Directors of Oak Ranch and is Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. David’s School. He also serves on the Wake County Economic Development Department Board and is a former member of Wake Forest University Alumni Council’s Executive Committee. Active memberships include The International Center of Shopping Centers, Urban Land Institute and National Association of Industrial and Office Parks.
T.J. BARRINGER
Development Director
As Kane Realty Corporation’s Development Director, T. J. Barringer leads and oversees all development efforts of North Hills by efficiently integrating development with the operation of Kane’s retail and mixed-use properties. Prior to his current position, T. J. worked for a little over a year with Kane as a Development Associate where, among other things, he played a critical role in managing the development for North Hills East. Before joining Kane, T. J. consulted in the Atlanta office of Bain & Company, a global business strategy consulting firm where he drove results for clients in numerous industries. He also has analyst experience with Lehman Brothers Investment Bank in New York and Highwoods Properties in Raleigh.
T. J. graduated with highest distinction from the Kenan-Flagler Business School of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a degree in Business Administration, and he also studied at the center for European studies at Maastricht University in the Netherlands.
STEPHEN A. BROWN, CCIM, SCLS
Vice President and Director of Retail
Steve Brown’s primary responsibility as Director of Leasing is the supervision of the company’s retail leasing activities. In addition, he is responsible for the direct execution of specific projects. With more than twenty-five years as a real estate broker with a concentration in retail properties, Steve has had experience with all types of shopping center projects – leasing properties ranging from small, unanchored specialty centers to multi-anchored regional malls. His experience includes the leasing of new centers as well as re-merchandising existing properties under redevelopment. Steve has former associations with Rubin Strouse Retail in Philadelphia and North Hills, Inc. in Raleigh, where his focus was on traditional enclosed regional malls as well as distressed properties.
Steve was recognized by the Triangle Business Journal for the execution of the Triangle market’s largest retail lease for 2002, 2003 and 2004. He is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, The Triangle Commercial Association of Realtors and the CCIM. Steve is also a member of the Board of Visitors of East Carolina University. He has earned the Certified Commercial - Investment Member (CCIM) designation from the CCIM Institute and the Senior Certified Leasing Specialist (SCLS) designation from the International Council of Shopping Centers. Steve is a graduate of East Carolina University with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.
BONNER G. GAYLORD
General Manager
Bonner Gaylord oversees day-to-day operations at North Hills and directs members of Kane’s property management, retail, entertainment, commercial and residential teams on marketing strategy, events, public safety, custodial, maintenance, as well as residential sales as Broker in Charge of Kane Residential. He is also involved in the planning of North Hills’ expansion, which when complete will make the project one of the country’s largest mixed-use developments.
Prior to joining Kane, Bonner held positions as both project manager and builder with Richard Gaylord homes in Raleigh where he worked on developments in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Apex and Wake Forest. He has also worked for DiVosta/Pulte Homes in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Bonner holds an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina and a Master of Business Administration degree from the Kenan-Flagler Business School where he was a Hobgood Fellow. He is currently a Friday Fellow in the William C. Friday Fellowship for Human Relations. Bonner is a NC licensed general contractor, a NC licensed real estate broker, is past Chair of the ULI Young Leaders Group. Appointed by the Raleigh City Council, Bonner has served on the Planning Commission since 2007. Bonner achieved certification as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited professional through the US Green Building Council. He is passionate about sustainable development and transfers that knowledge to his work at North Hills.
JENNINGS GLENN
Director of Finance
As Director of Finance, Jennings Glenn is Kane Realty Corporation’s senior financial officer with responsibility for overseeing financial strategy and planning and coordination among all disciplines of the company.
Prior to his position with Kane Realty Corporation, Jennings was the controller for Southern Industrial Constructors, Inc. in Raleigh where he was responsible for all aspects of accounting and financial reporting. He also worked as a senior associate at Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP in Raleigh and as a staff accountant at Blackman & Sloop CPA’s P.A. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Jennings holds a degree in accounting from North Carolina State University and a degree in political science from Queens College in Charlotte. He is a member of the board of directors for the Aldert Root Educational Foundation and chair-elect for the Loaves and Fishes board of directors. He is a volunteer for the Boys & Girls Club of Wake County, and The Oak Ranch. Jennings is an active member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church and participant in Bible Study Fellowship.
MARTHA GROVE HIPSKIND
Director of Senior Living
As Director of Senior Living, Martha Grove Hipskind has responsibility for overseeing the development of The Cardinal at North Hills, a full service continuing care retirement community.
Prior to joining Kane Realty Corporation, Martha Grove established a private practice in eldercare, providing direct care management services, speaking extensively on aging issues and planning for long term care, and consulting with a wide variety of corporate clients. She also worked as Director of Marketing and Aging Issues for Health Planning Source, and in account management for Bozell & Jacobs in Dallas, Texas.
Martha Grove holds a Bachelor of Science degree in gerontology from the University of North Texas, and a master’s degree in health policy from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a member of the Board of Directors of Resources for Seniors, and serves on the GOLD Coalition, a collaborative committee with oversight responsibility for the master aging plan for Wake County.
TISH TURNER
Director of Office Development
As Director of Office Development, Tish Turner spearheads marketing, leasing and development efforts for office space within North Hills and CAPTRUST Tower at North Hills. In this position she has responsibility for approximately 173,000 square feet of existing space and spends significant time working and developing additional office projects. Under her direction, North Hills received the CREW Champion Award for Best Office Development for 2006.
Prior to joining Kane Realty Corporation, Tish was vice president of Commercial Carolina. Her background also includes a leasing position with Highwoods Properties. Tish was featured as one of the “Women to Watch” in Space, a publication of the Triangle Business Journal focused on commercial real estate. Before beginning her career in commercial real estate, she taught math on the High school level. Tish is a member of the Board of Directors for Boys & Girls Club of Wake County, Board of Directors for Triangle CREW, and is a member of NAIOP, Raleigh Chamber Board of Advisors, and Raleigh Chamber Economic Development Committee.
A Cary native, Tish graduated from Wake Forest University with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics.
